How Mercari fees work

  • Selling fee: 10% of the item price plus any shipping the buyer pays. It includes payment processing.
  • Instant Pay: $3 each time you cash out instantly. A standard direct deposit is free; a failed deposit costs $2.
  • Buyer side: the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee of 3.6% on top of your price. It does not come out of your payout.

Shipping works in one of two ways. If the buyer pays shipping, that money buys the label: it raises the selling fee slightly but never reaches you and costs you nothing. If you offer free shipping, the fee is charged on the item price alone and the label is your cost.

Worked example

You sell a game console accessory you bought for $10.00. The label costs $9.00. You can list it at $45.00 with the buyer paying shipping, or at $54.00 with free shipping.

$45 + $9 buyer-paid shipping$54 with free shipping
Selling fee (10%)$5.40$5.40
Payout$39.60$48.60
Label you pay$0.00$9.00
Profit$29.60$29.60

The buyer pays $54.00 either way and you end up with the same profit, because the 10% is charged on the same total. The choice is about how the listing looks to buyers, not about fees.

What this calculator leaves out

  • Sales tax, which Mercari collects from the buyer.
  • Promotions and offers: enter the price the item actually sold for.
  • Listings created before January 6, 2025, which may follow the earlier fee structure.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Mercari take from a $40 sale?

$4.00 when shipping is on you, leaving $36.00. If the buyer also pays $8 for shipping, the fee is 10% of $48, which is $4.80.

Does Mercari charge the fee on shipping?

On shipping the buyer pays, yes: the 10% applies to the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. The shipping money itself pays for the label, so it does not reach you.

Is there a separate payment processing fee on Mercari?

No. For listings created since January 6, 2025 the 10% selling fee includes payment processing.

What does Instant Pay cost?

$3 per transfer. A standard bank transfer avoids it; tick the Instant Pay box only if you plan to cash out this sale on its own.
