Frequently asked questions
How much does Square take from a $100 sale?
On Square Free: $2.75 if the card is tapped, dipped or swiped, $3.60 for an online payment or invoice, and $3.65 if you key the card in.
Is Square Plus worth it for the lower fees?
Plus lowers the in-person rate from 2.6% + $0.15 to 2.5% + $0.15 and the online rate from 3.3% + $0.30 to 2.9% + $0.30. On $100 online that saves $0.40 per payment. Whether that covers the subscription depends on your monthly volume; the subscription price is not part of this calculator.
Why are keyed-in payments more expensive?
Manual entry and card-on-file payments cost 3.5% + $0.15 on every plan, because the card is not present and the fraud risk is higher.
Does Square charge extra for international cards?
Yes, an additional 1.5% on all plans.
