How PayPal fees work
The person receiving the money pays the fee, and the rate depends on how the payer paid. Most types are a percentage of the amount plus a fixed fee per payment.
| Payment type | Rate | Fee on $25 | Fee on $100 | Fee on $500 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PayPal Checkout, Guest Checkout or Pay with Venmo | 3.49% + $0.49 | $1.36 | $3.98 | $17.94 |
| Standard credit and debit card payments | 2.99% + $0.49 | $1.24 | $3.48 | $15.44 |
| Goods and services (send or receive money) | 2.99% | $0.75 | $2.99 | $14.95 |
| PayPal Pay Later | 4.99% + $0.49 | $1.74 | $5.48 | $25.44 |
| Donations (Donate button) | 2.89% + $0.49 | $1.21 | $3.38 | $14.94 |
| Charity rate (pre-approved nonprofits) | 1.99% + $0.49 | $0.99 | $2.48 | $10.44 |
| Micropayments | 4.99% + $0.09 | $1.34 | $5.08 | $25.04 |
A payer outside the US adds 1.5% to whichever rate applies. The charity and micropayments rates only apply once PayPal has enabled them on your account.
Worked example: what you keep
A customer pays a $240.00 invoice with PayPal Checkout.
- Percentage part: 3.49% × $240.00 = $8.38.
- Fixed part: $0.49.
- PayPal fee: $8.87.
- You keep: $240.00 − $8.87 = $231.13.
Worked example: what to charge
To end up with exactly $240.00 after the fee, the fee has to be covered by the payment itself, so the amount is divided rather than multiplied:
amount to charge = (amount to keep + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate)
($240.00 + $0.49) ÷ (1 − 0.0349) = $249.19. PayPal takes $9.19 and $240.00 reaches you. Simply adding 3.49% to $240 would leave you short.
What this calculator leaves out
- Currency conversion on payments received in another currency.
- Chargeback and dispute fees.
- Negotiated or volume rates on individual merchant accounts.
- Friends and family transfers, which are a personal product with different rules.
Frequently asked questions
How much does PayPal take from $100?
$2.99 for a goods and services payment (you keep $97.01) and $3.98 for a PayPal Checkout or Venmo payment (you keep $96.02). A card payment costs $3.48 and Pay Later $5.48.
What is the PayPal goods and services fee?
2.99% of the amount, paid by the person receiving the money. It is what buys the payer PayPal's purchase protection. Sending money to friends and family from a balance or bank account is a different product and is not covered by this calculator.
How much should I charge to receive exactly $100 after PayPal fees?
$104.12 through PayPal Checkout: PayPal takes $4.12 and you keep $100.00. Choose "I want to keep this amount" and the calculator does the same for any amount and payment type. The formula is (amount + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate).
What does PayPal charge for international payments?
The domestic rate plus 1.5%. A $100 PayPal Checkout payment from a payer outside the US costs $5.48 instead of $3.98. Currency conversion, if the payment arrives in another currency, is charged separately and is not included.
What are PayPal's charity and micropayment rates?
Pre-approved charities pay 1.99% + $0.49, and donations through a Donate button cost 2.89% + $0.49. The micropayments rate is 4.99% + $0.09, which beats the standard rate only on very small payments: on a $2 sale it costs $0.19 against $0.56 through PayPal Checkout. Both need to be enabled on your account.
