How Shopify fees work
What Shopify takes from an order depends on two choices: your plan, and whether you take payments through Shopify Payments or through another provider.
| Payment method | Basic | Grow | Advanced | Fee on $100 (Basic) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Payments, online | 2.9% + $0.30 | 2.7% + $0.30 | 2.5% + $0.30 | $3.20 |
| Shopify Payments, in person | 2.6% + $0.10 | 2.5% + $0.10 | 2.4% + $0.10 | $2.70 |
| Third-party payment provider (Shopify's fee only) | 2% | 1% | 0.6% | $2.00 |
- Shopify Payments: you pay the card rate for your plan and nothing else per order.
- Another payment provider: Shopify charges its own transaction fee, shown in the last row, and your provider charges its fee on top. The calculator shows Shopify's part only.
Worked example
A store on the Basic plan receives an $80.00 online order.
- With Shopify Payments: 2.9% × $80.00 + $0.30 = $2.62. You keep $77.38.
- With another provider: Shopify's fee is 2% × $80.00 = $1.60, and the provider's own fee is charged as well.
The same $100 order on each plan
| Plan | Online fee | In-person fee | Shopify's fee with another provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $3.20 | $2.70 | $2.00 |
| Grow | $3.00 | $2.60 | $1.00 |
| Advanced | $2.80 | $2.50 | $0.60 |
What this calculator leaves out
- The monthly plan price and paid apps.
- Shopify Plus, which has negotiated rates.
- International cards and currency conversion, which cost more.
- Your payment provider's own fee when you do not use Shopify Payments.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Shopify take per sale?
If you use Shopify Payments, only the card rate: $3.20 on a $100 online order on the Basic plan. If you use another payment provider, Shopify charges its own transaction fee instead (2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced), and your provider's fee comes on top of that.
Does this include the monthly subscription?
No. The plan's monthly price is a fixed cost that is not tied to a single sale, so it is left out. To compare plans, multiply the fee difference per order by your monthly orders and set that against the difference in plan price.
When does a higher plan pay for itself?
Each step up lowers the online rate by 0.2 percentage points. Moving from Basic to Grow saves $0.20 on every $100 of online sales, so the upgrade pays for itself once that saving, across your monthly sales, exceeds the extra subscription cost.
What are Shopify's in-person rates?
2.6% + $0.10 on Basic, 2.5% + $0.10 on Grow and 2.4% + $0.10 on Advanced with Shopify Payments.
